On April 12, the entire country celebrates Cosmonautics Day — a holiday symbolizing the great achievements of mankind in the exploration of outer space. For our university, this day has a special significance, because scientists from BSTU named after Shukhov make a significant contribution to the development of the space industry. Our specialists develop unique technologies and materials that are used in spacecraft and life support systems on board the International Space Station.

Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, founder of the scientific school, head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry, Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Pavlenko developed materials that have been launched into serial production and implemented at enterprises of the State Corporation Rosatom, the shipbuilding complex, and have been tested on the Russian segment of the International Space Station. For this, the scientist was awarded the medal of the Order "For the Merit to the Fatherland" of the 2nd degree.

Natalia Cherkashina, Doctor of Technical Sciences, leading researcher at the Research Laboratory of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry of the Chemical Technology Institute, author of more than 300 publications, created materials and technology for protecting astronauts and their equipment from space radiation. In February 2025, Natalia Igorevna received the Russian Presidential Award for Young Scientists for her scientific development.

Artem Ruchiy, a postgraduate student at BSTU named after Shukhov, won the annual open competition for the Yuri Gagarin scholarship. Another postgraduate student, Dmitry Romanyuk, received a similar scholarship last year. The scientific supervisor of the young researchers is Natalia Cherkashina.

Director of the Chemical-Technological Institute Roman Yastrebinsky gives an online lecture "Safety of Manned Space Flights. Exploration of Deep Space" and talks about the university's specialties related to astronautics so that applicants from all over the world can learn about the possibilities of our university.

In 2022, BSTU named after Shukhov was visited by Hero of Russia, test cosmonaut, Colonel Valery Tokarev. He highly praised the organization of the educational process, the material and technical base of the university, current scientific developments and the training of specialists in professions in demand.

Congratulations to all students and employees of BSTU named after Shukhov on Cosmonautics Day! May your dreams of the stars come true, and scientific discoveries benefit humanity. Be inspired by the successes of your predecessors and strive for new heights!
